Community Healthcare Education on Preventative Measures Against Diseases (CHEPMAD)

CHEPMAD program is focused on addressing the healthcare education gap among vulnerable elderly populations living in poverty. By providing culturally-tailored health education and prevention programs, the program aims to empower these communities to better manage chronic diseases, improve health outcomes, and break the cycle of poverty.

This program is crucial in addressing health disparities and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status, has access to relevant and effective healthcare education. By tailoring the programs to the specific cultural needs of the communities they serve, CHEPMAD helps bridge the gap in understanding and provide information and resources that are more likely to be accepted and utilized.

Preventive measures and health education play a significant role in reducing the burden of chronic diseases. By promoting awareness, providing information on healthy lifestyles, and teaching individuals how to manage their conditions, this program empowers vulnerable elderly populations to take control of their health and make informed decisions about their well-being.

Breaking the cycle of poverty is another important aspect of the program. Health and poverty are interconnected, and individuals living in poverty often face additional barriers to accessing quality healthcare and health education. By addressing these factors, CHEPMAD contributes to improving the overall well-being and quality of life for vulnerable elderly populations.

By providing culturally-tailored health education and prevention programs, it has the potential to empower communities, reduce health disparities, and make a positive impact on individuals’ lives. Our end goal is to improve access to healthcare services, promote and advocate for relevant health policies, as we contribute and enhance healthcare services through collaboration with other organizations.  We mandate ourselves to ensure that Vulnerable Elderlies  get access to medical services and provide them, and the community with general health knowledge.

Healthcare

Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental human right that many vulnerable and marginalized communities in Kenya do not have. At Hope to Live Kenya, we believe that everyone should have access to healthcare, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Our Program aims to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and families in these communities by providing access to affordable and quality healthcare services and healthcare education. Through our partnerships with local healthcare providers and our own community health workers, we are able to provide a range of services, from basic health education to diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses and diseases

Despite Kenya having a good healthcare system, it is still lacking in the aspects of ease of access and affordability in most parts of the country. The poverty rate in most communities deprive these individuals of their rights to highest attainable standard of health including health care services, in accordance to article 43 of the 2010 Kenyan Constitution, section 1 a.

Majority of Kenyans receive health care services from public sector with most of them seeking preventive, curative and rehabilitative services. With Kenya only having 4 tiers of health care system including community health care services tier 1, Dispensaries and health centers – tier 2, sub-county and county hospitals – tier 3 and referral hospitals tier 4, the most available tiers in the communities are tiers 1 and 2, which do not provide most of the services mentioned above.

Despite Kenya adopting policies aimed at promoting equity and addressing of the needs of the vulnerable individuals in the community, it is still saddening to note that the health care system is highly inequitable, and most of these policies have not been implemented.

The way funds are collected and used to provide health care services should be carefully considered to ensure the needs of the population, especially the marginalized ones are addressed. Kenyan health sector heavily relies on out-of-pocket money which the poor could merely afford.

There is still need to review the approaches by the government in collection and allocation of healthcare funds to accommodate everyone including the poor. Our interventions and targets under this strategic plan include

Our Response

Promote developed health care policies and other measures to improve access to health care among the vulnerable elderly persons and their households

To do this, we conduct research to identify the health care needs and challenges faced by vulnerable elderly persons in our community. This we do by engaging the communities to help us understand the specific issues and barriers that need to be addressed.
We then focus on engaging with local health care providers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to raise awareness of the health care needs of vulnerable elderly persons and advocate for policies and programs that address their needs.
As we do this, we develop partnerships with other NGOs, community-based organizations, and health care providers to collaborate on initiatives that promote access to health care for vulnerable elderly persons.
We also ensure on educating our target beneficiaries and the community members on the importance of access to health care for vulnerable elderly persons and the impact of social determinants of health on their well-being.
We as well advocate for policy change at the local, regional, and national levels to improve access to health care for vulnerable elderly persons. This may involve advocating for increased funding for health care programs, changes to regulations, and other policy initiatives.
Our health care programs generally provide direct services to vulnerable elderly persons and their households, such as health screenings, home visits, and assistance with accessing health care services.

Conduct healthcare education in communities to improve preventative measures against diseases affecting a given community

We develop educational materials that are tailored to the target audience and the specific diseases affecting the community. This includes brochures, posters, videos, and other materials. With the help of our partners such as community centers, schools, and religious institutions we are enabled to reach the target audience and distribute educational materials. Holding community events, such as health fairs aid us in providing information on preventative measures and promote healthy behaviors. These events also provide opportunities for community members to ask questions and receive guidance from healthcare professionals. We also aim at providing training for community health workers who can serve as ambassadors for preventative measures in their communities, with our vulnerable elderly persons in mind. They can help distribute educational materials, provide one-on-one education, and refer our target beneficiaries to healthcare services when needed. To reach wider audience, we utilize social media platforms to promote preventative measures.

Mobilize support and resources to enable us do a continuous medical camps in communities with far-reach health care facilities

Mobilizing support and resources for continuous medical camps in communities with limited healthcare facilities can be challenging. This is one of our strategies for the 2023 - 2027 strategic plan. To accomplish this, we seek partnerships with other organizations, health centers, and hospitals to expand our reach and pool resources. This helps to increase our capacity, improve your credibility, and reduce costs. Engaging the community in planning, organizing, and promoting the medical camps also helps to build trust and support, increase participation, and ensure that the camps meet the needs of the community with our beneficiaries in mind. we have recruited volunteers with medical expertise and experience in community outreach. This helps to reduce costs and increase the impact of the medical camps.

Working together

Engaging like-minded stakeholders to improve healthcare and palliative care services is critical to the success of our NGO.
We identify and build relationships with potential stakeholders that share our goals and values. We also intend to educate stakeholders about the importance of improving healthcare and palliative care services to the vulnerable elderly persons and the role that our NGO plays in achieving this goal. We use data and research to support your arguments and demonstrate the need for improved services. Collaborating with stakeholders on projects that align with our NGO's mission and goals helps to build trust, increase our buy-in, and expand our reach.
We are always committed to working together with all the stakeholders to ensure the well-being of our beneficiaries and the communities around Greater Western of Kenya

Enrolling the vulnerable elderly persons in health care cover

This is a very critical step in improving healthcare for this population. After identifying elderly persons who are vulnerable and have limited or no access to healthcare coverage, we enroll them to NHIF cover. This is a limited initiative as it is expensive to maintain on yearly basis. We then educate the elderly persons and their families about the importance of healthcare coverage and the benefits of enrolling in a healthcare plan. We provide them with information on available options, such as government programs, and community-based health plans.
We assist elderly persons with the enrollment process by providing guidance, support, and resources. This includes assistance with filling out forms, navigating the enrollment process, and connecting them with enrollment counselors. We finally provide information on available healthcare services and resources that are covered under the healthcare plan. This can include information on healthcare providers, hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities.
