Tuma Upendo Initiative
Tuma Upendo Initiative
Tuma Upendo Initiative (TUI) is a comprehensive program dedicated to improving the lives of elderly Kenyans who face food insecurity, inadequate housing, and social isolation. At TUI, we mobilize support from individuals, communities, and organizations to provide essential resources—including nutritious food, clothing, and household items—to seniors in need.
Beyond material support, TUI actively restores dignity and comfort by undertaking home repairs and renovations, ensuring that elderly individuals have safe and welcoming living spaces. We also organize monthly community events designed to foster social connections, combat loneliness, and help seniors feel valued and included in society.
The initiative was born out of a deep concern for Kenya’s rapidly growing aging population. As the number of citizens aged 60 and above rises, TUI addresses the urgent challenges faced by this vulnerable demographic through targeted interventions that make a real difference. Our key areas of focus include:
Medical Support
TUI is committed to ensuring that elderly Kenyans have access to quality healthcare and medical services. Many seniors face challenges such as chronic illnesses, limited mobility, and financial constraints that make obtaining care difficult. Through the initiative, we provide regular health check-ups, referrals to medical specialists, assistance with medications, and emergency medical support when needed. TUI helps seniors maintain their health, independence, and overall well-being by addressing both preventive and urgent healthcare needs.
Food Security
Food insecurity is a major challenge for many elderly households in Kenya. TUI works to ensure that, very vulnerable seniors have consistent access to nutritious meals. We organize regular food drives and distribute essential food items such as grains, vegetables, fruits, and protein sources. In addition, TUI provides special dietary support for seniors with health conditions like diabetes or hypertension. By alleviating hunger and promoting proper nutrition, the initiative helps seniors maintain their strength, vitality, and quality of life.
Safe Shelter
Many elderly Kenyans live in homes that are unsafe, deteriorating, or unsuitable for their needs. TUI addresses this by undertaking home repairs, renovations, and accessibility modifications. This includes building new houses, fixing roofs, repairing floors, improving sanitation facilities, and adapting homes to be safer for those with mobility challenges. TUI aims to provide a stable and secure living environment where seniors can live comfortably, safely, and with dignity in their own homes.
Social Inclusion
Loneliness and social isolation are significant challenges for the elderly, contributing to mental health issues and decreased quality of life. TUI combats isolation by organizing regular community events, support groups, and recreational activities that encourage social interaction and meaningful connections. Volunteers and community members actively engage with seniors, fostering companionship, emotional support, and a sense of belonging. Through these programs, TUI helps seniors feel valued, connected, and integrated into their communities.
